ContinueHow do modern antiseptics work?
Antiseptics are used to disinfect the skin or mucous membranes. They contain an antimicrobial substance and their main aim is to prevent or stop infections. These substances should be well tolerated, non-toxic to the whole organism, broad-spectrum (destroying the maximum number of microorganisms) and very effective.
Mankind has been using them for thousands of years. For example, cow urine was once considered an effective disinfectant, and Hippocrates recommended cleaning wounds with wine. Alcohols were applied in the middle of the 19th century, and in the 20th century, quaternary ammonium salts and iodized povidone became widely used as antimicrobials.
Among the most recent patented substances with antiseptic effects is octenidine. This substance is the key ingredient in Octicide. Modern disinfectants based on octenidine are effective and gentle on the tissue, do not burn or stain, and can not only destroy microorganisms but also prevent their multiplication. This effectively prevents complications during healing.
